Final Script | The Coded Internship (Story of the Manufacturer)

Story of the Manufacturer:

To explore the story of the Manufacturer, we tapped into the general demographic of Factory 020. Thus, we established a colour palette by extracting colours from an image of the streets of Porto, as this is where our factory is based.

Building upon Martha’s previous point of celebrating the Artisan, we wanted to produce a print that radiated positivity and excitement, whilst also depicting a sense of individuality.

To achieve this, utilising our colour palette, we designed a print that incorporated an plethora of fingerprints. We felt that fingerprints, and painting with fingerprints, was quite playful, and this aligned with Factory 020’s values, such as _________.

Moreover, we also felt that fingerprints were very humane and personal. Linking also with the Story of the Garment, a collection of fingerprints could serve as a visual voice for each individual that touches / works on the garment, forming a unique print that, in our opinion, resembles confetti.

As a group, we chose to develop this print by using pixilation to depict censorship. This is because we wanted to touch upon the original concept of this project: the unheard / unnoticed Human Voices throughout the Supply Chain. Pixilation is an intentional tool in Digital Media to censor a particular aspect of an image of moving visual. We felt that this concept was a good comparison to the Factories that chose to distort / hide the truth. Ultimately, the intention of this print is to elude to the idea that we do not know what goes on behind closed doors, and many Factory Workers are unaccounted for throughout the Supply Chain.

This next print delves back into our general concept of Microscopy. Focussing on the Artisan, and the intense manual labour that is required to meet the modern demand, we chose to create a print that captures human blood under a microscope. In our opinion, this print is very stripped back and raw, touching upon the concept of vulnerability, and creating a clear distinction between people, and machinery.

We chose to adjust the colour of the print, switching towards a more of a light blue. This is because we felt that red was quite a violent colour, and we didn’t want to corrupt our general message of celebration, whilst also delving deeper into the Coded’s emphasis on transparency. Inside the human body, blood is actually blue, so we felt that this colour choice was the most suitable to combine our concepts together.

To develop this print further, inspired by a traditional style of Portuguese tiles, we created a mirrored print, using our concept of censorship. We felt that this print encapsulated most of our ideas, whilst also further building upon our focus on building a community; tiles are most successful when they are multiplied.

Finally, inspired by Donald’s point the last time we met, we chose to tap into the concept of ‘Blood, Sweat, and Tears’ commonly used across the industry to describe the manual labour throughout the factories. Thus, we created three designs, each depicting one of the three words, and we joined these designs together to create a larger print, encapsulating this concept. We felt that this print would be especially successful if printed on the back of the garment.
